Qumran and Galilee

Qumran is my favorite place. If you know how to capture time, you can withdraw from everyone and everything in that rugged, brittle place. I stole away and found myself alone in a cave at the bottom of a ravine. The Dead Sea Scrolls–an ancient cache of scripture–was hidden at Qumran thousands of years ago. The Jewish Essenes sealed the scrolls in clay jars just a stone’s throw from where I stood. I looked down and saw a little clay pottery sherd by my feet and smiled; I am humbled by the invitation to spend a lifetime searching out the hidden things of God.

“It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings” (Proverbs 25:2).
